I hope someone can give me some advice.
I am installing 3/4, 3inch wide flooring in a bedroom(used to be carpet). The hallway leading up to the bedroom already has wood flooring that ends at the doorway to the bedroom where it transitioned to the old carpet.
I thought I could easily start laying the new hardwood in the bedroom using the doorway as my starting point as this is the most visible location, also I would not need any transition since I could lay the the new wood groove into the existing woodfloor.
Everything was fine until I got near the end of my starter row. There is a master bath entry on the same wall as the main entry into the room. It appears the wall on the far side of the bath entry is about a 1/4 inch off.
The end result is my starter row looks good at the main entry, but does not transition well at all with the bathroom entry(on the same wall. Instead of being a nice clean 90 degree angle with the tile, its joining up with the tile at an angle and doesn't look right. Is there some way to bend your starter row to adjust for or mask the angle problems, or should I be starting from a different location.

Thanks for your advice

Dry lay boards without fastening or gluing them. Make a mark, and then measure to be square as you pop a chalk line, to keep everything straight. Stay on the line!!!!

Yes, it matters as once your off, it magnifies across the room, and it becomes a real fight.

thanks for your reply.

I will try your suggestion.

I'm still confused in general about how you handle a hardwood floor installation in a room where both the entry to the room and bathroom entrance are on the same wall, but the new hardwood floor only lines up with the entry, by the time I lay it down by the bathroom door and try to align it with the bathroom tile, Its crooked?

Thanks again for your advice

So the two doorways are on the same wall, and when you get to the bath/tile its off? Is the tile maybe not set straight? Are the tiles full pieces at the door way? If so, do they start at the same points at the both jambs or casings? Definitely do as Perry said and square it up and pop chalk lines.

Also, are you attempting to have the wood butt up to the tile? If not, and you're using a T-mold, is it that much of an angle at the tile, that when the molding is in place it would still be noticeable?

Thanks for your reply, I think there are a couple of problems with the bathroom entry.

First, I think the tiles set in the bathroom are at a slightly different angle than the wall I have my starter row on. Also I think the wall on the other side of the bathroon entry is out of alignment slightly.

When I butt the floor up against the tile, there is a 1/4 inch gap on one end. However, I will be ripping out/replacing the bathroom tile sometime in the future so I'm thinking I can realign the tile to match the hardwood.

I followed Perry's advice and measured an equal distance from both ends of the outside wall in torward my starter row and snapped a chalkline. It does seem like my starter row is correct and that it is more if a bathroom tile/ wall problem. I will chisel a few tiles back and I think my transition will be ok.

Thanks for your advice!
