I'm in the process of building a new home. I will be placing 3/4 hardwood floor through most of the main level 2700 sf. My concern is I have a stairway to the basement that the top 1/2 is sitting at 45 degrees to the flooring. The butt ends of the flooring will be going into the top bullnose at a 45 degree on the top and sides for approx. 5 ft. My first thought would be to router a tongue into the ends of the planks to seat into the bullnose peice. I'm concerned how that will look. I'm new to the site and what I have read there looks like alot of good knowledge here. Your thoughts would be appreciated. Norm

I would put the stair nose in first, then use spline in the nosing and staple it down. Then cut my 45's and router the ends to lock them in and hold the nosing down.

Thanks Jim,
One other question would I put bullnose around the entire top of the stairway? Leaving it hang over an 1" or so? The sheetrock would go up under the bullnose? Then the railing would set in from that. If anyone has a pic of this would be great. Thanks for your help. Norm

Jim,

I went to your website, I like your border styles. Are you doing the same method with those as I would with the stair bullnose to lock them in? What manufacture would you recommend for a red oak 3/4 flooring? Approx. cost? 2000-2500 SF I have alot of work before the floor goes in but I would like to have it ready to go when needed.
Thanks Norm

I'm not sure I'm following you completely, but let me try. The bull nose ( I call it stair nosing) is made with a small lip on the bottom that would set over the sheet rock or riser and cover the top. Install your sheet rock first and finish it. I would suggest waiting untill you get hvac running before starting the install and check moisture levels.

As far as pricing, I don't know where you are, but it depends a lot on location.

I'm in North Dakota, we mainly have to order it through a furniture store or Menards/Lowes. Is lumber liquidators good? Thanks for the advice on the stair nosing I think I get the picture. I agree on the HVAC it will also be nicer to work if it gets hot and humid.

Thanks Norm

I like gotwoods description of how to do that.

When buying wood you should take a piece of flooring with you to compare as ordering transitions and stairnose pieces without seeing them can be a pain. I do go to the local LL here but only because he stocks a boat load of transition pieces I can't find anywhere else. The price on some of those exotics pieces will floor ya.

Yes, better to take piece of flooring when buying the wood flooring. Wood flooring is appropriate for any environment and circumstances. In addition, to appear good-looking and attractive, hard wood floors are environment friendly. They are enduring and they do not require substituting after a few years.
