So I'm new here and have a few questions about refinishing my stairs. I'll just use this first post as a background on myself and my project. I'll follow up with some pictures when i figure out how to do that.
I'm not a professional; i've been renovating my house for 3 years. this is the last major thing to do for me, and its last for a reason! I'm unsure of alot. here we go....
i've got a winder staircase open on one side. i've installed bamboo on the main floor, and hallway upstairs. now i'm trying to fill in the stairs with the same planks i used for flooring plus bullnose, and veneer. I know its not the usual way to do stairs, but its what i've got to work with.
the stairs were built for carpet and used 2X10's for treads. the plan is to first cut off all overhanging parts of the tread. next i will veneer the risers. and finally install planks and nosing.
it sounds simple enough, but i'm hung up in a few areas:
1) cutting the overhang off the treads on the winders is less straightforward.
2) veneer issues: how true does the surface have to be? i'm talking about the new riser surface after i've cut the tread overhang off. i suppose i could tack a 1/4" ply before the veneer? the other mess i make when i cut the treads is where they are notched into the stringers. the new bullnose is smaller than the scar that is left behind, so i think i have to cover up the entire stringer with veneer. thats lots of work!

sorry if this is hard to follow without pics. i've tried uploading to putfile, but its not working. maybe someone can help me on this one.
As far as the project goes, am i on the right track? is this do-able?

thanks for any advice

The project is do-able.
If your stringers are painted, you can fill in the exposed holes in the stringer and repaint. Take your time and it will be near invisible.
Rather than use 1/4 ply and veneer for the risers, use plywood with bamboo veneer already attached. You then just use an edge band on the exposed side of the riser or fabricate a subtle moulding that appeals to your aesthetics.

best process for this project is to start with the bottom riser, then the first tread, and work your way upwards to the top step.

Take your time, its your house and you will spend many accumulated hours walking up and down this staircase so a bit of extra time spent doing the work will be by far out-weighed by your satisfaction with a job well done.
