I am installing 3/4" X 3" Brazilian Cherry, probably BR111, which includes seven steps up, and the top of step only, of seven steps down (which will remain carpeted). The floor boards will be perpendicular to the steps. The steps up are exposed on the left side, and will require the nosing to wrap around the edge, as well as slightly around the back (1-1/2").

Design issues that need consideration:

1. Complete stair tread boards vs. 3" nosing and 3" floor boards? (or 5" nosing and 3" boards?)

2. Top step nosing that meets perpendicular 3" floor boards. (3" or 5"??)

Here is photo which shows the steps and foyer area. Parquet is coming out (hopefully, easily): http://bit.ly/dRyCjr

Thanks in advance.

Oy, all that mauve carpet is hurting my eyes!

Get stair treads. The amount of time you will save vs building those out of planks and nosing will totally make up for the price differential and they will look a zillion times better.

Thanks, I think I agree. Although, the BR111 stair treads and risers come unfinished, which seems like a problem.

And, you are correct, the carpet is coming out. You should see the all pink living room. Bare (and beautiful) steps are in the plan.

How about the question about the top step? Nosing meeting the perpendicular 3" floor boards. 5" nosing to contrast against the 3" run of planks? Or, similar 3" nosing?
