Hello all,
I have sanded my floors (100yr old house) and I was not able to get rid of all the stains. Unfortunately the floors were cover with carpet and the carpet installers made a ton of slashes in the floor with razor knifes. After a lot of sanding i was able to remove the cuts, but there are stains that remain where the floor was cut.

Can anything be done to remove these stains? thx!

no, there is nothing that can be done to get rid of them.

you can try to precondition with diluted shellac and stain over thst, but I suspect you will still see it

it is a doug fir and this is very indicative of the material.

It has to do with the oils/saps in the wood.

its almost as if the wood bruises from caster wheels, furniture dragging etc.

Just a phenomena of the wood itself.

it gives it character

Thanks, that is very interesting. Do you think wood bleach would help or just make it worse? I'm guessing stain would probably make it stick out more? Should I try to stain (what color or technique would be best?) or leave it natural?

Thanks for the help

some stains go all the way through the wood regardless of species, especially when left unattended. things like urine other high ph can cause these kind of stains in any wood. while you have the floor sanded is a great time to do some board replacement. properly identifying your type of wood is critical to getting the right material for the replacements. any flooring professional should be able to identify the type of wood. the repairs should be almost invisible with a little filler and a nice new staining.

I don't belive Bleach will help..
but it might.but do the whole floor.

the problem here is the wood will now turn whitish.

this may be enough to mask the marks.

you can still stain dark..

but it will be effected in color.

these marks really don't look bad after finish.

I cant tell you definitively as I have never bleached a Fir
