I just bought a 1939 house with original white oak hardwood floors. Since we have two small children and plans for a dog, I spent a bundle getting the floors professionally refinished to protect them. The floor guy did two coats of Bona Seal and two coats of Vermont Natural Coatings finish. Looks great - I am very happy!
Yesterday, unbeknownst to us, our son had a small accident (urine) on the floor in the bedroom that we didn't know about. Now there is an extremely dark stain on the floor and the floor guy says we will have to replace the boards. The stain seems as bad as if there were nothing protecting the boards at all.
Now...I know that urine makes bad stains on hardwood floor but I thought it was repeated urine, like a cat continually peeing on a carpet on top of a floor, that made bad stains. I didn't expect one time to create something awful, especially with two coats of finish. I have previously lived in houses with hardwood floors, white oak and yellow pine, and did not have problems with just one time, it had to be repeated.
The floor guy thinks it's the Vermont product. This is the first time he used it and he did so at our urging because we wanted to try something natural. He wants us to put a few coats of Bona Traffic on top. My main priority now is protecting the floors so we don't have to replace boards every time someone has an accident. Any insights here are much appreciated...
