I have red oak wood floors. I had two areas that didn't have the oak and I cut and install the oak flooring. I stained it once, waited 4 and a half hours and stained again to darken it and try to get it to match better. I checked it this morning, eight hours later, and it's still tacky and glossy. Do I just need to give it more drying time or do I need to sand it all down again and start over? I'm afraid I didn't wait long enough between coats. If so, what can I go? It's difficult to match the previous stain because the area I patched was stained around and so the line between of the old stain is very dark. Any suggests?

thanks.

Did you wipe off the excess stain?
What kind of stain? Oil?
Lots of oils need to sit out at least 12 hrs sometimes 24.

If it is still tacky the stain was not wiped off properly and will not hold a finish. I would suggest sanding it off and using a darker stain or water pop the the floor to get the desired color. You cannot keep applying stain to get a darker color.

Try wiping it down with a rag wet with paint thinner/mineral spirits.
