Hi Guys, great site and nice to be on board!

I have a bunch of 7" reclaimed fir, prefinished w/ hardwax oil, to lay on concrete.

The pile has acclimatized for a couple months in the living space.... I was injured and the project had to be put on hold for a while.
During that time, there has been some UV lines from indirect sunlight form on the end of planks that were not completely covered.
We're talking 6" here or there, most times at the end of the plank as they were all strapped together, faces together, in the pile.... but not all the butt ends met up perfectly in the pile.
It's not going to be the end of the world to discard those ends, but of course involves cutting the stained end off, t&g the end, rout the micro bevel and retouch the bevel with stain.

Is the rest of the floor going to catch up to this discolouration when its laid and exposed to light.... or will the stain always be ahead in colour for the lifetime of the floor?
It's my house so I can be a little more patient

Thanks!

Adam

The coloration will all depend on the areas the planks are installed in. If you install where there's minimal uv, it will take forever to catch up with the board ends. Planks installed with higher uv exposure will catch up quicker. It should all eventually blend.
One of the tricks for plank replacement on an existing floor that shows change in coloration, is to set the planks to be used for patching out in the sun for a while, to speed up the blending, or darkening process. Also heard Dennis mention, he's used a heat or tanning lamp in their warehouse, prior to the plank replacement.

thanks florologist

I wish it was just the smaller pierces that had the issues... unfortunately it's some of the longer ones, which are less plentiful and obviously desireable for the higher traffic/visible areas.

If the rest will catch up for sure, I may just strategically place those ends where there may be a plant, sofa, etc.

At this point in the build, I definately don't need another project to add to my list with the cutting/re-t&g, etc option!

Your going to sand it though right? Maybe sanding it will help eliminate the patina. I'd check it out first.. Not so sure about the prefinished with the wax, sounds like you might need to screen anyway and re-wax. Whats the manufacturer say bout that?
