I guess to start ,I have old 50s oak flooring. I already sanded and applyed 2 coats of red oak stain. There are still some areas that look blotchy, I may have not wiped good after my coat. I really dont want to add a 3rd coat I am though going to add 2 coats of sealer. Could I use a buffer to get the more uniform look. I put the 2nd coat of stain on last night so it is a bit sticky but pretty dry. Any thoughts would be appericated.

Thank you

Well, two coats is already one too many coats of stain; so adding a third coat is not going to help anything.
Please describe the nature of the blotchiness in as much detail as you can. Someone here may be able to determine exactly whats wrong and suggest a remedial action for you.

Some of my issues are, when I applied the stain in like 4x4 sections let it sit for like 5 mins then I would wipe it down go to the next section. Some of the sections really show where I started one and started the next. The transition in places really show. Can I get rid of that look.

Thanks

Re-sand the floor and use a quality stain designed for wood flooring. BONA Dri-Fast is idiot proof, almost. By applying 2 coats of stain, you have already seriously inhibited the clear finishes ability to adhere to the floor. Odds are, the clear coats will peel off. Best to start over, following the instructions this time. Staining is one of the areas DIYers typically screw up on wood flooring, so don't feel bad. It takes knowledge, experience and some skill.

When applying the stain, do not do it in square sections, run a 2 - 3 foot swath from end to end, work quickly to avoid over-drying the stain or you will end up with "lap" lines where you start the next section.
