Installed prefinished natural but never tried sanding and staining it. Beech is a sorta strange wood. Lots of "scandanavian" furniture made of european beechwood but always finished in a natural. Perhaps you can get a piece and experiment with it.

Beech is a bitch to stain acts alot like maple.
