Hello, This is my first post as I am new to the forum.

we have oak hardwood installed in our home. In a couple of areas, one in particular, the squeek from walking on it is obnoxious. I looked from underneath and the subfloor is attached solid to the joists. What I see is that when a person walks on the squeeky spot, the sub floor gives a bit underneath. Is that normal? How do I fix it and what could be causing the squeek? Around the general area of the noise you can see the staples that have been shot down through the sub floor from installation but they don't seem to be moving.

Any help or guidance is appreciated. I can't remember ever seeing a sub floor flex. And, I just don't know what would make an obnoxious squeek with the wood floor and sub floor. I at first thought it was the nails in the subfloor but it isn't

thanks everyone

well you have to stop that subfloor from moving to stop the squeak. its likely the seam where the plywood butts up is rubbing together, if its dipping down when you walk on it the other end/side is lifting up and rubbing the adjacent peice. Sounds like you have access from below, if that is the case you can screw it off from below using a short screw or what ever it takes to stop the deflection. stop the movement stop the squeak..

Thanks for the reply...
So would you recommend screwing the sub floor directly into the hardwood or put a brace under that spot and attach to joists? My first thought was to screw diagonally through the joist, sub floor and just into hardwood

Thanks

If the floor is moving off the joist then you simply need to shim it there unless I am not understanding the post. It's going to be hard to suck the floor down through the joist with a screw, maybe possible but I think shimming it is easier to keep it from moving. There's also some snap off screws you could probably hit the joist with from the top. But hitting that sweet spot might be tough.

Oh, sorry....the floor isn't moving off the joist at all. It is just sagging slightly when stepped on. So when you walk across the floor, when you step in this squeaky spot, it is not over a joist. Not sure of that helped?

Block between the floor joist. Then from beneath, drive a screw or two up into the subfloor and into the flooring.
