I was not too happy about the spline prices, and immediately started looking for alternatives. I attempted to minimize the amount of ripping required, and found a great source.

The box stores sell oak stop that is at length, about 1 3/4" x 7/16", with rounded corners, but flat on the bottom.

I then cut a groove in a straight board the height of the trim, and 1/4" deep. I mounted the board to my table saw fence. I ran the fence right to, but not touching the blade. In about five minutes, I was able to rip each trim board into four splines. Since the first spline cut ends up with a rounded corner, I only count three useable splines per board.

I kept a couple of extra trim boards, so that if I ever need more splines, I can reattach the fence board and rip more splines when I need them.

This technique results in splines that cost less than $0.30/lf; this is a whole lot cheaper than purchasing splines pre-made (at about $1.80/lf), or wasting good flooring for splines!

I pay about .12- . 18 a foot for oak splines. Is everyone else paying 2 per foot for them?

The last box of splines I bought was .15 cents per linear foot and they are marked NOFMA STANDARD.

I hate when I am doing an exotic install and forget the matching splines. I cannot find tigerwood splines anywhere LOL

I'm sure that there are great prices available to professionals who purchase splines in great quantities, but for the DIYer, this is the option they face:

http://www.lowes.com/lowes/lkn?action=productDetail&productId=231913-972-Q10

Assuming that Lowes's description is correct (perhaps not), with 12 4-foot splines per $116.42 box, this equates to $2.77/lf! Regardless, it is unlikely that a single job would require a $116 box of splines!

One could rip splines from flooring boards--a rather expensive option too.

The option here takes a piece of trim already close enough to required slip-tongue width so that only a single table saw rip is required to produce oak splines that are a fraction of these available costs.

Besides, this method provides the option of ripping splines up to fourteen-foot lengths! I choose seven-footers because they are easier to handle. I can rip what I need and no more.

I hadn't seen those, but I made my own with a planer and radial arm saw. Came out to about 14 cents a foot, plus maybe 45 seconds per foot of labor on average... I bought a 1/2" x 3 1/2" x 8' plank and it wasn't too bad... made a TON of sawdust though with the planing and the ripping. If I had found some for sale at 30 cents a foot or so I would have just bought them but had no such luck locally.

The onlinefloorstore.com is indeed a winner, but that Kahr's price ($4.00 per meter  )?

I think khars uses a different size, so they can charge what they want. Most prefinished woods I have installed the normal spline I have dont fit, always have to use the planer on them
