I discovered the two sliders on one side of the room I am going to be laying hardwood strip flooring in had been leaking for some time. I've replaced the rotted subfloor panels with new of same thickness. I have a leveling issue, however. The builder used liquid nails (or something to that effect) along with nails to secure the subflooring to the joists. I opted not to, after seeing what a huge pain it was to remove the leftover, just in case I should ever have to effect that repair again. I am taking the neccesary steps to make sure the slider never leaks, but...

Anyways, as near as I can tell the difference in height of the subfloor is primarily due to the absence of the adhesive. The delta is 1/8" or less. Any reccommendations? The local home depot guy said to use a floor leveler compound, which I bought. I haven't used it yet as the directions claim the compound becomes "rock hard" after ~24 hours curing. Is this the right stuff or is there a more appropriate method of dealing with this?

THanks

won't that leveling compound bust apart when you nail the floor down?

I started worrying as soon as I read the directions for the leveler that either it would shatter when I nailed through it or I would screw something up in the nail or nailer when trying to nail through the leveler.

a little less than 2 4x8 panels that abutt on the short side. They are a little lower than the surrounding panels. I only have to worry about 3 sides - the fourth is the wall.

well...i gotta ask: what size sheeting was the original?

if it was 5/8" then make it up with 3/4" etc etc..

i go thru something similar when trying to match old plaster walls with 1/2" drywall.

Everything was 3/4" originally. The two panels I put in place are 23/32" (no 3/4" labeled stock at the supercenter). The depression is more than 1/32" - more like 1/16". Definitely not 1/8". Like I said before, when ripping the two panels out I noticed underneath the liquid nails had swelled enough to account for the delta. Out towards the wall the difference is less.

Does anyone have experience using the asphalt shingles to level? I don't mind doing whatever it takes. I just want to make sure I don't have issues down the road, and no issues laying the flooring down. This is my first floor in the house to do, but it is the room we use the most often so I really don't want to screw something like this up.

Thanks again.

I had a area similar to that on my floor,,, just not as large. I belt sanded out the big stuff around the edges,, and put a few extra layers of resin paper in to build it up.

It just so happened to be right in a walkway. I have 2 young boys ,,, a fat wife  ,, a Doberman Pinsher ect............... been a few months and no problems whatsoever. I did however get a little nutty with the nails in that area.
