Hello, I'm new to the forum and was hoping to seek out some advice for my flooring project. I just sanded the old southern yellow pine and installed 350sp ft of new yellow pine in the rest of the house. There is a fairly strong contrast between the aged old pine and the new. Old floor rings are darker than new wood. Any thoughts for matching?

My prospective plan is to cover everything with a 1lb cut of shellac as sealant

a light oil based maple stain from Zar

Then a Tung oil/turpentine mix as finish.

I have loose boards of each on i can use to test, but I thought I would ask the forum first.

I'm familiar with the formula that you are going for. it has some advantages but in the end, nothing will make the new look like the old except for time and natural oxidation.

If you shellac and then stain the new pine, the color will likely be closer but the grain is going to be accentuated plus the pulp will optically be pulled together to look like the same color where with the old floor, you likely see variance between light and dark boards.

Also, in my opinion, the shellaced and stained new pine will over time become darker still and might even get further away from the old pine in appearance. But all you can really do is test some boards and see what you think. If you like what you see, then go for it. Just keep in mind that shellac / stain on the new pine can have the same visual effect as using pre finished wood where the color is sprayed on and makes all the boards close to the same exact color.

I agree the finish will help with the match as will time. It really does not look that far off. I bet it will all look pretty uniform in a few years.

Thanks very much for the responses. I'm off to sampling boards and will post a pic of the final decision.

Cheers,

Travis
