I recently installed my first SYP floor on a project. I noticed that the end cuts were rather rough and ragged but square. In order to match the old flooring in the adjacent rooms, we stained the SYP. Since the ends cuts were ragged and porous, the stain soaked in deeper and producing a dark line at each butt.

The sales rep at the supplying lumber yard said that he "re-cuts" the ends of "non-matched" flooring before installation. I don't customarily do that and didn't include it in my budget for this project.

Does anyone know the trade standard on end cuts for SYP?

Most all pine flooring is sold non-end matched mostly due to the problem of the long lengths. they normally are trimmed but not squared. Always ask, if it is end matched it was most likely ran by a flooring mill not a saw mill and will be higher in cost due to the end matching.

Yes 99% of the pine I see is not end matched. Most of it is actually pine decking planks,in any event water pop all soft woods, let it sit minimum 2hrs after.High humidity will cause this process to take longer to dry.
