I have a client that owns a house on a lake in upstate NY. The house is not used (or heated) in the winter. Would solid wood be better than engineered flooring?

Quality engineered flooring is more stable than solid .Also the cut of the wood makes a difference.Quarter sawn and rift sawn flooring is more stable than plain sawn. Lastly, Ten Oaks LLC offers a few types of flooring that are pre sealed but meant to be site sanded that are extremely stable.

I can't agree with engineered over solid. I have resanded floors from bygone eras that are still kickin despite the lack of humidity and temperature control. The finish was still on them, with little damage other than a few gaps here and there. In a couple of cases the house had seen near zero temperatures in the winter for a couple of years.

I was reading a story about engineered where there was delamination occurring in a home where humidity dropped 8 percent below recommended levels. Plus if anything happens to an engineered floor it is for the most part replaced where as a solid wood floor can be refinished at least 3 or 4 times.
