I have a job where they want to use unfinished wood, probably oak. Radient heating is installed under subfloor.
What is the installation diffrence between such a projec tand installation on a regural subfloor?

Black moisture barrier paper?
1 1/2 inches long cleats? Staples?

Thanks for help.
RAFI.

Thanks

A 6-8 mil polyethylene vapor barrier should be installed over slab radiant heat systems. Tape all seams to be sure the barrier is tight. To protect the barrier from rips, some contractors lay 1/16" (1.5625mm) thick foam sheeting over the vapor barrier.

This is as far as the moisture barrier.
We use black paper here in CA. Do you think I should use 6 mil polyethylene and then foam? Do they mean the kind of foam we use for floating floors?

THanks
Rafal

I'll say it again. DON'T INSTALL SOLID WOOD OVER RADIENT HEATED SUBFLOOR!!!! OK, I yelled it.

Call your wood flooring manufacturer!!! Have them fax you all the requirements and jobsite specifications, for their wood over radient heat to keep the warranties on the wood. I bet money they say their solid wood over radient heat voids all implied warranties, because I have yet to see one solid wood manufacturer say you can install their solid over a heated floor.

Don't take our words or anyone elses. CALL THE MANUFACTURER!!!!

The NWFA tech manual has specific guidelines for installing solid or engineered hardwood over a radiant heat system. You can join them and get the manuals sent to you. But, having said all that, each page has a disclaimer to "follow manufacturers printed installation instructions".

So I would start with the manufacturers printed installation instructions to keep you safe.
