I am looking to lay about 300 sqft of hardwood in my living room and have the opportunity to buy about 550 sqft of Timberland 5/16" solid oak hardwood. I am concerned as I know generally hardwood floors are 3/4" so this seems pretty thin in comparison. Is there an issue with using thinner wood?

Also I am curious about the Brand if anyone cares to comment on Timberland. As I said in the title it is Tavern Grade so I expect there will be some defects but since I would be buying almost twice as much as I need I suspect this shouldn't be an issue?

Thanks..

I've had some thin wood like 5/16 go together just fine. Thinner don't mean the milling is worse or better. But I ain't familiar with Timberland so could go either way. Just means less meat to resand with.

timberland is bruce/armstrong seconds with a 5yr warranty. so its a little hit or miss like any off fall product overall its a good value if your willing to take the time to cull through and pull the worst offenders out. Id fiqure about a 15% overage 50% is way more than you should ever need.

The most stable peice of wood is 1" by 1" block. Thickness and Width do have a strong correlation in terms of stability. The wider you go the thicker you want your floor. Let me explain there used to be an old axiom that anything over 7" in solid required that you would need to double the thickness to maintain a relative amount of acceptable stability. This is probably economically unviable. Never the less people are pushiing this more and more ever day.

well id say if there looking at tmiberland 5/16 he probably not in the stan lund market. anyaway wd is right a 5/16 solid can be unstable so be sure that all moisture checks are done and documented prior to installation.
