Hi all, Newbie here that has just fininshed having floor installer do a walk through my 20 year old house with quite severe flatness issues. (3/8-1/2" dips)I will make this short.
He wants to rip down diningroom and kitchen to the 5/8 OSB sheathing, SLC and then staple and glue 1/2" Proboard and then the new vinyl.
**Can you staple through the SLC effectively??
**What type of glue to hold the proboard down with the staples?..just PL400 run in beads or a complete coat of some other glue?
Now to explain a bit further..
We have the adjoining livingroom and entrance down to sheathing and he wants to level everything throughout all rooms with SLC and then finish the dining and kitchen like that so there will be a nice transition from new hardwood that is going in living room and entrance to the new vinyl..
He said that was the only way to get the consistant transition..
Any comments would be much appreciated as this is due to happen in a few days.Hope i have enough info for some suggestions.
Thanks.
P.S. very informative forum..

I have a couple comments for you.

1) this is a hardwood forum..

2) if you feel the need to question, second guess and circumvent your installer,my guess is you shouldn't have hired him.

Ultimately he needs to honor his work and warranty it..we can not play armchair quarterback from a forum..

your questions should be directed to him and if you doubt something, you should ask for a reasonable explanation.

I guess I'm supposed to say thanks for the reply James??
1) Yes I understand its a "hardwood" forum.. the name is pretty self explanatory. Sorry to bug you with a simple prep question that somebody might have experience with that would want to share.
2) As far as questioning my installer...thought that I could gain second opinions from some experienced installers on the subject..you have never questioned anything someone has told you and reached out for second opinions?

You're probably better off with a forum that deals with all aspects of flooring, particularly with those that handle vinyl day in and day out. As for my own opinion, I just can't see SLC over a wood subfloor, because it's not advisable for hardwood installations..but this isn't a hardwood floor installation.

Sorry for the confusion.

It is not advisable to staple through SLC, it can get pretty hard and I would bet it would bend the staples before they hit the subfloor. You might be able to cut the ply into strips and or 4 x 4 kerfed and glue it over top.

I would full spread some Sikabond T-3f and glue down the ply. Takes lots of patience.

Flooring forum is better than FP any day of the week.

I get people who do their homework online. Some good, some bad info. I do like my clients to be educated because there's a lot of grey areas out there concerning subfloors. Plus they don't call it the information superhighway or infobahn for nuthing.

FYI, I'd like to see somone staple into SLC after it's cured, the initial strength is probably like 90% the next day and the psi of SLC's range 4,000 to over 5,000 psi, just like concrete. Must be an awesome stapler!

Stephen

A stapler will blow right through the slc. I wold be a little more concerend with the length of the staple My senco can blow through plywood like its nothing.. the small entry into slc will not break it apart..its clean

The deviations 1/4-1/2 are nothing.
A plywood or in this case pro board can effectively be fastened. It's done all the time.
The new underlayment in effect sandwiches the slc.

I personally think screws or screw nails would be better
Full bed ideal but cross gluing with well installed mechanical fastening will absolutely work.

Pre-drilling also an option if necessary.

Okay guys. I had to wipe some posts from this thread. Something didn't work right here and it became a bit unprofessional.
