Hello my name is Shane and I am currently looking into installing a maple hardwood floor at my roller rink and have some questions that I hope can be answered.
There is not much info online about actual skating rink floors but this I what I have gathered.
I need to know what the best practice is.
This is on top of a 4 inch concrete slab that has had at least 60 days to cure.
1. one layer of cold floor asphalt (what is this?) or to use plastic sheeting? 2. 1/2 inch layer of styrene for moisture and sound barrier or cell foam cushioning? 3. 1 layer of plywood (how thick?) 4. Another layer of plywood but inserted diagonally (how this) 5. some type of 15 lb. roofing felt 6. Actual hardwood nailed into the top layer of plywood 7. sanding - course, medium, then fine sanding 8. 2 coats of seal 9. paint lines on floor if needed 10. 2 coats of finish
Now I will be honest I don't have experience sanding and coating floors but I feel like I could do all the rest myself to save on labor cost, but I am confused on the actual layers and if my layer order is correct.
Now if each piece of hardwood is nailed into the top piece of subfloor don't that stop the hardwood from expanding when it needs to?
Also I understand that around the perimeter of the floor there needs to be a 3/4 inch expansion gap, but what about in between the plywood sheeting, does there need to be gaps around each sheet?
Now I also understand there is 3 levels of maple hardwood with the white being the most expensive. How much more does this cost that the other 2 types and is it just the color that differs? And where is the best place to by hardwood like this?
The total skate floor is 145' long by 75' wide and we are located in Northern Indiana.
Thank you all so much for your help!
