 Post subject: second floor to the stairs

i want to put down laminate floors on my second floor. but my problem is i don't know what to do when i get to the steps going downstairs. what do i put over the curved part of the second floor and will the next step down be spaced differently?

You need a stair nosing..the old nosing should be cut back flush to riser so it has a strait and square edge..then new nosing installed. yes, spacing will be different to the thickness of flooring.

Usually the flooring/nosing, you install at the top step is within acceptable thickness range as compared to the material installed on the steps. Although have also seen some drastic differences , at top or bottom....say if morter beds, or underlayment is installed.

If it's a solid wood nosing then you would have to either rip up or add depending to make the laminate flush. Depends on what was there previously.


*edit* oops meant to say rip up or add ply wood to subfloor.
