Darn. I accidentally scratched my new bamboo floor. It is basically a white looking scratch. I assume it's coated with aluminum oxide as i've been reading. The scratch seems to not be very deep. Just into the urethane.

What are my options for reparing this? Is there just a simple repair kit I can use to paint over the scratch. It doesn't have to be perfect... Or, can I sand the urethane off the whole board and just redo the urethane coating. If I can do that, what should I use to redo it?

Thanks for any help....

Chris

Hi Chris,

A lot of times you can make scratches virtually disappear by using a bit of "Liquid Gold", "Old English" or other similar stuff. I don't think any are really recommended for poly coated surfaces but they work for me. Like you, I'm interested in knowing the proper way.

Go to HD or Lowes and get a small can of satin or semi-gloss polyurethane, take a cheese cloth and rub a little into the scratch rub it until it is almost dry and try to keep the application to a small area surrounding the crack, wait a few hours and hit it again. It will not make it disappear entirely but you will have to look for it to find it.

Thanks for your help. I've been doing some testing. It seems that a major part of my problem is that the scratches are so shallow that nothing wants to fill them in. I've tried poly and a stain marker for a test. Deeper scratches seem to work but mine don't. It's very odd that I couldn't just buff them out or something. I'll try the cheese cloth idea. When I tried poly earlier, it looked good when it was wet but as I tried to wipe it off a bit, the whiteness of the scratch seemed to just come back.

Its not odd at all. Aluminum Oxide is really hard finish. Although its not hard enough to avoid sharp objects lol.
