I am interested in making a few scrapers for hand scraped floors. Has anyone made these kind of scrapers and point me in the right direction. Thanks.

Cut the bottom out of the bottom of a glass pop bottle. The neck is the handle. Otherwise, the commercial handscrapers cost about $350.00!!!

Visit Lei Nielson (sp?) They make a decent scrub plane. We use two of them and keep an extra blade or two handy. they go from $140 - $170. Have done many thousands of feet with them, a block plane for edges, and bosch 6" orbital sander/polisher for smothing.

Also look into Festool power planer with the special die. You'll see it on thier web site. You'll spend up to $600 for the new planer, special die and blades for that particular porpose.......

Or a beer bottle works good too

I dont understand the technique with the beer bottle. I figure dring the beer, then go at the floor.

Will,

Is this the planer and attachment you are talking about from Festool?

Have you used this? As you know, I got about 50 walnut treads to scrape. Wondering if this would be worth it? Thanks

I am getting ready to do another hand scraped floor myself and I appreciate the info that everyone has sent me on their techniques. I am going to do a write up on how I do them for your guys with some pictures when I get a change. But the basics of my method is that I get one of those cheap $20 electric planners and remove and grind the knife down to basically the same shape as William scrub plane and sharpen it up. Then reinstall it back into the planer and go to town it works great, looks authentic to a scrub plain’s marks and is really fast. As soon as I start on the hand scraped floors I will post some pictures.

Thanks for your input too kls. My partner's threatened to do the same. Yes Gary, that's the one ... truth is though that I have yet to use one myself. John Lorhan owner of St. Joseph's Hardwood Floors has told me several times that I'm working too hard and should get one.

HEY ... you guys should look intoSheoga brand floors as well. Theyve got a super prescraped either in un fin or pre fin. They will also special mill for you up to 10 foot lengths. Gossip is that Homerwood lost thier Amish guys to Sheoga over not so ethical business issues ... just gossip so don't go quoting me ... Anyway ... I couldn't beat thier price or service when inquireing about thier stuff.

Not sure if Ken is still moving Sheoga or not but I REALLY like thier solid Pre fin over Homerwoo, Kentwood, etc ... I have yet to cull out one piece of thir product or find one birdmouth. I especially like the 8' ers in the mix and smoother finish compared to others. Anyway, all that info and a $1 will get you a cup-o-joe at any truckstop in America....

Have fun guys!!
