Thanks guys for all support on installing my new red oak floor. I am getting ready to sand the floor. it is an unfinished red oak floor. What type of sander should I use. Should I use the orbital or the drummer. I know the drummer requires practice and care. Since I am sanding a new floor, what will be the best. I need something that will flat the surface. Also, what grits should I start with and what grits should I finish it with? Before applying my waterlox stain, I know I have to take out all the lint off the applicator, please can you share you techniques of removing these lints. thanks

You should use the drum sander and edger first followed by the orbital sander. New wood floor has a burnished surface from the manufacturing process and the drum sander will remove this for you quickly while at the same time leveling out any differences in height from board to board at the same time.

The orbital sander while more novice friendly isn't really aggressive enough to deal with these two issues in a timely manner.

I would suggest reading an article I wrote about using a drum sander before attempting to use one.

How to use a drum sander without killing your wood floor
