I am looking to have pre- finished hardwood sanded and weaved in with new unfinished wood. Then have both stained and refinished. I had two contractors out to give me an estimate. One contractor said that when the pre-finished floor is sanded the beveled edge between the strips will be completely removed and that it will be flat like the new wood. The second contractor said that some of the edge will remain and that it might be a noticeable difference. Anyone have experience with this? Who is correct? Thank you.

Depending on the size of the bevels and how much is sanded off some might still show.

You have to sand it a little past the bevel to be sure and get it out if you want it all out, which is going to take some extra passes for sure. Its difficult to get it all out. I did this at my parents house and we missed a spot or two where we thought we had it but when we put the finish on you could see a little bit. Once we moved all the furniture back in no one has ever noticed. I would ask him how much he plans on leaving, he should be able to get 95% of it out if not all to an untrained eye.

Agreed with the size or depth of the bevel. Here's a video showing a Bruce prefinished floor that had the bevels sanded out. The object was to get all the areas to look the same. Most of the layout was originally sanded and finished while a dining room had the prefinshed hardwood, apparently installed at a later time period. On completion I didn't see any signs there ever was a beveled floor in the house. I was quite impressed with the outcome.

Thank you for sharing that video it was very informative! I can see that it is a lot of extra work. At this point I am think we are going to take out the existing hardwood floor in the foyer and replace it with unfinished 3 inch to everything can blend well. I
