I have a small apartment with oak strip floors. They were completely refinished 7 or 8 years ago with three coats of Minwax Polycrylic. In high traffic areas the finish is wearing off. However, to refinish the floors properly, I would have to empty out the apartment completely and that is not an option at this time. Are there any provisional methods I can use to touch up the finish on the high traffic areas? I saw something in the supermarket the other day that is supposedly for this purpose, but I was wary of it. Any thoughts or recommendations would be appreciated. Thanks.

I bought in once and used the Varathane Renewal kit. It was ok for something like what your doing BUT BEWARE ... if there are ANY fractures in the finish clear through to the wood itself, the 'sanding' solution you treat the floor with WILL significantly darken the wood. You'll see black scratches where those fractures were.

Otherwise ... visit a local flooring store that seels some of thier favorite HW floor specific cleaner (Glitza, Bona kemi, Poly care (my favorite),etc...) If they cary it in a concentrate get it. Follow the instructions on the concentrate but mix it a bit rich. This will exfoliate the area of all old cleaners and stuff like that.

Next you'll have to decide what you want the additional coat applied on. All of it, high traffic areas only, etc...

Answer that and I'll help more from there....

In order to achieve what the competition cannot grasp, we must complete what they will not attempt. Nobody ever said it would be easy, but it's darn sure worth it.
