My house was built in the late 1950s. Based on the condition of the hardwood floors, they appear to have been covered by wall to wall carpet for much of the time. There are one or two water spots on the 650 square feet of floor. There are also two small areas of floor that have a slight lip/build up were the base board of a previously existing wall sat. These areas are also significantly lighter in color where the interior of the wall once was.

I would like to refinish my hardwood floors but have limited knowledge in this area. I was searching your website for a restoration alternative I could try before I pay someone to sand and restore them. I came across the webpage that talks about Aluminum Oxide Finishes. The Basic Coating/Bona Kemi section appears to be what I am looking for.

Is this the product you would recomend in my situation?

Any help you can provide would be greatly appreciated!!

More than likely, your floors have been waxed. No surface coating will adhere to wax except more wax. To bring those floors to their former glory, pay to have them professionally sanded and finished. Then you can have them stained the color you wish and have the Bona Traffic floor finish applied. The cost will be comparable to having a high quality wall to wall carpet installed. But your house will be worth more with the wood as it is more desirable. Hire the best guy in town, regardless of cost. It will be worth it.
