Hello, I am going to install 3/4 " red oak in approximately 860 sq feet of living space. I live in Seattle,WA

My question is:

I have about 250 Sq feet of vinyl in the kitchen (4yrs old). What is the process to remove this and how difficult is it? My brother stated that it was extremely labor intensive when he did this to his kitchen and that I may as well pay to have it taken out. The cost is roughly $900 to have it removed by the floor installer.

2nd question:

My baseboard is that cheap imitation baseboard with wood texture. Is it possible to paint this stuff white? My door jambs are made with the same material. My house is 2800 Sq feet and I would like to avoid the expense of replacing all of it. Would it be best to find some matching 1/4 round for this stuff? How about not using the advised 3/4" gap between the wall and the flooring? Would a 1/2" gap work just fine (then I wouldn't need 1/4 round)?

Thanks,

KRV
