Arggh!! :x

My project involves putting down some beautiful new maple 3/4" planks in the kitchen and dining room, and replacing a darker wood floor in the foyer. I thought it was solid hardwood, but nooo....it's engineered wood that has been glued down to the subfloor all across.

I've removed a few smaller pieces in one area, and it's not coming up easily...the glue is stronger than the wood. I've read that it might best just to set a circular saw to a depth that will cut the flooring and the subfloor, and then just put down all new subfloor.

Any better ideas out there? I didn't exactly budget for a new subfloor...

Removing glue down wood is WORK. That is why we professionals charge so much for that service.

It may be easier, but more costly to remove the wood and subfloor.

I always cringe when I'm asked to glue directly to a wood substrate.

I can get my circular saw going and cut sections of the subfloor out. One thing I don't get is how I would cut the floor up close to the wall. All circular saws - well, all the ones I've seen - can cut about 2 inches close to the wall and no closer. Do they make a tool that can cut right along the wall?

I was going to cut through the wood flooring and the subfloor and just replace it all. Then I remembered that the subfloor was glued and screwed down to the joists, so that isn't going to work. I've decided to just put the new hardwood floor down on top of the old 3/8" glued-down floor.

Of course, you need to add 3/8 plywood to the areas that do not have the old flooring in them. And you need to realize the new floor will be 3/4" higher than your floor was before. Take that into account as well for transitions to other rooms, doors, exterior thresholds, and numerous other obstacles.
