I'm staying in an apartment and accidentally removed part of the finish (long story short, a hot cloth was left on the floor). There is not a big circular dull spot in the flooring. My questions are:

1) Can anything be done to repair this section?
2) What sort of costs am I looking at if I have to pay for the refinishing?

Thanks

Are you sure its not a waxed floor? Will water drops make white spots as well if left on there for extended periods?

I'm pretty sure it's not wax. Leaving some water in an inconspicuous spot now. This cloth was steaming hot. The area where it was laying is now rougher than the area around it (to me it "feels" like wood now, rather than smooth and shiny like the rest of the wood.

I'll have someone who knows more than me look at it and tell me if it's waxed. if it's waxed, can I just reapply the wax myself to the spot?

What came about of this?

Its tough to say w/out seeing it. Its difficult to match finishes on any wood. Like when you get your car back from the auto shop after its been in a wreck. You can't just paint half of the door, the entire door has to be finished and painted.

Hopefully its not going to be noticed, maybe try some poly in a spray can, match the sheet and spray it. Test a small area first.

good luck.

It would be better if you posted a pic of what happened, that would explain things better.

If it's just the finish, and not the stain, you may be able to get away with a screen and recoat. This would just add another coat of poly on top. (or you could try 2 coats. It might be easier, less messy and less costly vs. a whole sand & refinish.

I would recommend calling in a professional to get an estimate and opinion as to what needs to happen.
