Hi everybody.
We just bought a house in the Hudson Valley region of NY and want to put our grimy thumbprints all over it before moving in -- including 3/4 x 7" wide yellow pine floors in the bedrooms.

We pulled up carpeting and found a layer of masonite tacked down to the 3/4" OSB subfloor. Is it recommended that we pull it up (is masonite a kind of particle board?) -- or is it okay to leave as some kind of extra support?

This forum has been a valuable resource for us. Thank you for your help. -- Peter

I think I would take it up. There is a "tempered" Masonite that is used for underlayments, but I don't believe it is suitable underneath wood flooring.

That was my instinct from reading this message board -- and every time another person told me "leave it, it's fine" I just got that uneasy feeling. Thanks, it's coming up today.

Another question -- why was it put under the carpet in the first place? If it's a sound muffler or something -- is there a similar recommended material that can go under the floors? My kids stomp around a lot.
