What should be done if contractor is having problems with removing glued engineered hardwood floor(small layers are coming up) on osb. They are now back pedaling and claim that Mirage 3/4 hardwood floor can not go directly on top of osb. They want to place new hardwood product on top of old floor, leaving a large lip when transitioning to other floors.... What Do you advise??? :o

Sounds like they under estimated the take up of the existing wood flooring, and now are squirming and trying to convince you to leave it. They didn't plan on buying you new subfloor, once the glued wood is removed.

Your situation is why I am constantly reminding homeowners and contractors not to glue wood floors directly to their subfloors. The demo is a nightmare and sometimes, the subfloors are ruined. I have always recommended an underlayment under glued down wood floors. Read this post I made a few years ago.
Quote:
When gluing down an engineered floor over a solid lumber subfloor, you will need an underlayment of 3/8" plywood, at least. When gluing down to a plywood or OSB subfloor, many are tempted not to use an underlayment. I prefer to use a 3/8" plywood underlayment over a plywood subfloor when gluing down a wood floor because if the floor needs to be repaired or replaced, it is easier/better with underlayment than with the subfloor.

It can be found within this article:

But on how to deal with your situation. Mirage 3/4" could/can be installed directly over 3/4" OSB subfloors over joists spanned 16" OC. But it sounds as if now, they can't get the old flooring out without ruining the subfloor. I could have told you that before they got started. Depending on how far they've gotten, it maybe best just to remove the subfloor as well and replace it. Or remove the old engineered floor and overlay the mess with new underlayment. Hard to say without being there. They may have been able to go over the existing floor if they installed it 45 to 90 degrees to the direction of the existing flooring. This should have all been gone over with you, the customer, prior to a contract being written.
