We had our Oak floors refinished last Oct/Nov 2013. As the title suggests, the floors were stained and then finished with three coats of a water-based polyurethane. The contractor applied the last two coats on the same day (given it was late fall, the house was also a bit on the cool side). He said that it would no be a problem; however, we noticed right from the get go that the floor scuffed very easily - leaving white streaks all over the floor. We had him back and he said it was normal. Since then the floors have gotten much worse and are covered with dozens of streaks.

Below is a link to a few pictures. These were taken several months back - the floors are much worse now. The third and fourth pictures in the series depict a spot where we cleaned a spill using a cleaner the contractor recommended. It doesn't seem right that you should easily be able to remove finish with a soft cloth/gentle cleaner. In general, it is very easy to scuff the floor.

Anyway, in your opinion is what we are seeing indeed normal?

what finish was used?

applying 2 coats the same day is no issue

they look like sneaker marks and they can be removed..

has nothing to do with the finish.

what cleaner did you use?
if you used a scuff remover your probably went to deep on it.

provide more info and lets see if we can resolve it.

was the floor topcoated the same day ti was stained?

Thanks for the response. I don't know the exact brand but it was water-based urethane-acrylic.

The cleaner we used is called goof-off. Its a heavy-duty degreaser, spot remover, etc.

We had been advised that perhaps the third coat did not properly adhere. It sounds like thats not the case. I guess I'm disappointed at how easily the streaks can be created - we don't wear shoes in the house. What do you suggest to remove the streaks?

Goof-Off contains xylene, which is a solvent. I'm not sure the word "gentle" applies when you use a solvent on something that it dissolves. I use the foul-smelling stuff only with great reluctance.

I'm not sure why the guy who did our floors recommended goof off, but I'm more concerned with the scuffs that are appearing everywhere (even without shoes) and what to do about them.

if the floor is scuffing without even wearing shoes then I suspect there is an adhesion problem.

he may have coated the stain too quickly.

its important here to know what products otherwise we are just guessing.

provide more details or there will be no solution to be had

goof off is not a floor cleaner..it removes waxes, adhesives, paint etc..

The finish he used was Nano Shield by Rustoleum.

I'm still confirming what stain he used.
