Hi all...Here is my issue. We have knocked out the wall between our LR and FR in our 1968 built Ryan home. One floor is finished red oak (standard ryan finish...amber varnish) and the other is "ranch plank flooring"
according to the original plans, and both have had wall to wall carpeting for the last 43 years. Both are pristine except for carpet staples and some small holes drilled for cables. I think the ranch floor is prefinished with dark pegs (reading online shows they might be walnut) with a slight bevel at the seams. The contractors installed about 3 rows of new red oak where the wall was. My dilemma is that I want to refinish the whole floor in a dark stain (red mahogany or similar) by sanding and then staining. Will I be able to get a uniform finish with
a) those pegs!,
b) possibly 3 kinds of floor (prefinished, new floorboard at prev. wall site and onsite finish)
c) using dark stain to disguise/cover the differences

My hope is that sanding the whole lot will reduce the bevel, lighten the peg color to natural and enable the whole floor to be stained evenly.
I can post a pic but new to site and do not know where...any floor experts have this dilemma before? results?

THANKS for any input...Kir

Are both floors, ( or the 3 floors? ), Red Oak? Are they maybe the same product, but one was pegged and grooved at one time? One way or the other..your going to see those pegs, weather they're walnut, or on a rare occasion, oak. You may be able to come up with a stain color that some what camoflauges the pegs....but I would defer to the sand & finish guys on that one.

Pictures would really help. If you have a problem posting on this site....you can post pictures on Flickr, and post the URL here for us.

my pics are under kirboe in user gallery
not sure if FR (ranch plank floor) is red or white oak. I google searched for manufacturers around 1968 and the ads usually say they are factory sealed...most likely walnut pegs. My end goal is to have a dark floor similar to the drawer next to fireplace in one of the pics. Hoping dark will mask most differences, and hoping sanding will reduce bevel. thanks again in advance for any input from floor experts...
