I am going to pull up existing carpet in our family room. there is just carpet and a pad underneath. i will pull out all the nails and staples obviously.

i will be installing 3/4" X 3 1/4" Brazilian Koa in the room.

am I ok to just lay down 3/4" plywood in the whole room for underlayment over the subfloor? or can it be thinner?

should i also lay a layer of rosin paper?

anyone have some advice for if this will be good?

will screws be ok to secure the plywood with? and how far spaced apart?

THANKS!

I just finished adding 3/4 ply to my entire house. After I ripped out the carpet I found 1/2 with 1/4 luan throughout the house. I pulled the luan and used 3/4 T&G over the 1/2. Glued and nailed about every foot. Used roofing paper between the 3/4 ply and my hardwood floor. Very solid floor....love it!
If your current floor is solid then you should be ok going with 1/2 inch, but for the difference of a few bucks per sheet it wouldn't hurt to overkill it a little. The last thing you want is your new floor to develope squeaks...
Screwing is fine, but it'll take longer. I knocked it out with a framing nail gun.
Hope this helps!

What's your existing subfloor?
I would install 15lb saturated felt (roofing paper)as an underlayment, as opposed to red rosen cover paper.

Screwing always is best... 8-) followed by stapling but not to sure about the framing nailer. I guess it will work.Does it shoot ringshank? I use 2 inch staples 7/16 crown, 16 ga Senco. I don't elephant around.

I wish I could only work on wood substrates. It's always concrete concrete concrete round here.

??? Elephant around? Thats not what I typed lol

I finished the install this weekend.
it looks amazing!!!
went with 3/4" OSB screwed down with 15 lb paper on top of that stapled down.
I then laid the 3/4" solid Brazilian Koa on top. took the better part of the weekend with some custom floor vent cuts. But it turned out great! not sure how to post pics on here, but i can if anyone would like to see.

thanks for all your help! now time to order the next batch and move onto the next room :)

Use plywood covered with rosin paper. Screws will work. Also use construction adhesive.
