We will be installing hardwood (haven't picked it out yet) on the stairs going from our first floor up. This stair case is in our foyer which has ceramic tile..the stair case is currently carpet. We will not be removing the tile. So, the stairs will come down to the tile with the ground level being tile. Since the hardwood installation is over the existing stair, how do they achieve that first step being of equal height with the remaining stairs?

We are not doing our own installation, but want to make sure it is done correctly. Thanks for your help!

Cindy

(hope this makes sense)
