In performing a search on this board and the internet in general, I have been unable to find a detailed answer to this question.

Flooring manufacturers instructing indicate that a floor must be level within 1/8" (give or take depending on manufacturer) within an eight foot diameter.

Diameter is the key word that is confusing to me.

So how do the pros go about measuring for this 1/8" level area? Do you use your eight foot straight edge and rotate it in a cirlce on the floor marking the low spots, and then move on to the next eight feet of floor?

Or do you start at one end of the room and level your way across the entire floor?

This is probably a silly question, with hopefully an easy answer. :)

Using a straight edge, I work my way across the room in every spot, in both directions, mapping any teeter-totters(high spots), and grind them down. Them remap for the valleys(low spots), and fill them.

Thanks Floorguy.

Why do you suppose manufacturers use the term "diameter" in their subfloor prep requirements?

It sounds like working your way across the floor in a grid-type pattern is the better definition?
