I had my floors finished 6 weeks ago, and he used 2 coats of Minwax high build polyurethane, semi-gloss. After some putty issues, I had to do a 3rd coat. Here is what I did:

1. lightly sanded the floor using a pole sander and 220 grit paper.
2. swept floor, and then used Bona floor cleaner (spray) to clean it.
3. Applied Bona Woodline oil modified in Satin finish to 800 sq. feet using the Bona roller. I did a 4 x 4 section at a time, as told by the guy who sold me the Woodline. I poured the woodline horizontally, then rolled it with the grain of the wood.

It has been almost 72 hours, and the finish has dried to a beautiful satin in some areas, and a shiny semi-gloss in some spots. I want a satin finish all over.

What did I do wrong? I was told that I didn't stir the cans well enough. I actually didn't stir the cans at all (quart size).... Could this be the only problem? The temperature in my house has been between 50-64 F. I did not turn on the heat at all (not living there). Should I turn the heat on? Is the old semi-gloss showing through? Did I use too much in some areas, and that's why it's shiny? Did I not sand the floors enogh? Confused....

I don't have a problem doing a 4th coat, I just want (and need) it to turn out properly this time.

Thank you

I would say that it can be any of the issues you suggested. Most likely it is the previous coats being semi-gloss and the floor not being sanded/buffed good enough with the pole sander. I think that the only solution at this time aside from resanding the floor is to buff the floor really well with a buffer rather than a pole sander. I would use a 150 grit screen for this. Then coat the floor with semi-gloss. Being that a coat of satin was done over the semi, sort of sealing the streaks in there, I think your only hope is to do semi-gloss.

Thank you Rhodes....

I will use a 150 grit sander, and use the semi-gloss. My downstairs floor is oak, and I actually preferred the semi-gloss. But, the upstairs is Douglas Fir, and it looks way better with satin, since it's such a smooth wood. The semi-gloss makes it look cheap.... I think the upstairs floor had previously been refinished, many years ago.

What's the maximum number of coats a floor can have? I already have 3 coats on there.

Do you think the Woodline OMU was the way to go? It applied very easily for me, considering I've never done this before.

What temperature should I set the room to?

You know how I said I did 4 x 4 squares? Well, some squares are the smooth satin finish, and some are the glossy finish. That's why I think it's weird... It's not little tiny spots here and there, it's actually the area I did at that moment....

the problem you have is not stirring and mixing the finishes..

since you worked form qts...you needed to make one large batch with your cans, stir consistently for a few minutes...and occasinally during application.

this is where your problem went..the cans were all inconsistent in settlement.

the lack of heat may make you dry rough,..but not cold enough to have a real impact on your sheen..

also dont use a roller.....the Bona roller was made for their finish Naturale...never heard it used or recommended for oil base.

sand down and do again..I would use something a little rougher than 220..maybe 120.. rent a buffer is possible..will make quick and better work of it..

Make sure you get it right or you will crate mroe problems and have to start from scratch

set heat for normal living conditions..68 is sufficient..finish you used is fine.

mix all your quarts into one batch..then stir

Thank you very much James! I think it was definitely a stirring problem.... Floors turned out very nicely this time.

I agree with mixing all the quarts together, first mix each one then pour them into a larger bucket and mix again. But I always use a roller and only use Bona Woodline it works great I think better then a sheep on a stick.
