I put down 4" pre-finished cherry in living room and hall. I had no squeaks or pops at all before I put the 1/4 round down, now i have pops and cracks along the 1/4 round. I cut the 1/4 round to length then put a coat of trim paint on it, then nailed it down. I intend to fill the nail holes and put on a second coat of paint.

What should I do? Will caulking fix the problem? Did I just nail it down too tight? Any suggestions would be appreciated! Thanks, I've learned a lot reading this forum! Steve

The paint on the quarter round was not completely cured. And I bet it was water/latex paint. What is happening is as one walks near the walls, the subfloor deflects a very little, pulling the floor away from the quarter round. The paint is still "tacky" and the sound you hear is the bond between the paint and the floor breaking apart. It's annoying. It will diminish over time.

Yep, I have had it happen. It is really bad when there are drips and runs and the back side/bottom of the trim. I had to take it off and use my razor knife to cut the excess paint off.

Pre-Painted stair risers are the worst offenders.

Hey, Thanks for the replys! I haven't done anything yet and it seems to be getting better already. I'll give it a few more days before I start pulling it up. Thanks again. Steve
