 Post subject: polyurethane scratches

I have 3 coats of oil based varathane on Australian jarrah engineered floating floor. How do I sand the top coat to remove some scratches then top with new coat. I tried polishing the scratches out with my porter cable car polisher using compound and polish but all it did was shine up the surface
