Hello!

We are installing a hardwood floor (3/4" x 4" Brazilian Cherry) and will be putting it over a 3/4" plywood sub floor. We are going to have to raise the floor a bit to transition into other rooms that have tile. We will be putting "Insulayment" felt-type stuff under the wood. My question is, can we put down a layer of 1/4" plywood under the felt to get lift for the transition?

Also, I wonder how to deal with transitions if one room of adjoining tile is "thicker" than a different room of adjoining tile? In other words, on one side of the room the tile in an adjoining laundry room was installed over 1/4" HardiBacker but, on the other side of the "wood room", there is a transition into a kitchen that has same the same thickness of tile but in this case over 1/2" backerboard. The transition into the laundryroom is under a door but open passage about 7 feet wide into the kitchen.

Lastly, how important is it to scrape up all the remaining staples that once held down carpet pad, prior to installing wood floor?

Thanks very much for your advice!

Just did a 3/4 X 4" B cherry install last week. This wood is very hard and does not always slip together easily, I would not recomend building up specific areas, if you are going to put down a 1/4" ply, do the whole area. As for the different heights of the tile, put reducers in. They can be purchased where the flooring was, or you can make them out of the left over wood from the installation. Now, the staples, just hit them into the plywood with a hammer, as long as there is no padding or carpet stuck in the staple, you will be fine.
