hi there,

new to this forum,

okay heres the deal, we just moved into a fixer-upper and my mom wanted to renew the hardwood flooring by sanding it down and refinishing it. She says she's done it before and she has, two previous times to good success.

this time though, the guys we hired to sand it down did a decent job on all but the living room. The living room wasn't going so well using the belt sander, it was taking 9-10 passes of 60 grit sanpaper to get some areas of the wood that were still untouched, so they just went at it using the more-precise edger sander, which visually, solved the problem. The floor was sanded seemingly uniform in color, and they did the entire room like that with the edger ( I know, kinda ghetto, but its cost us next to nothing and to the eye looks respectable ) It felt smooth and looked alright so we proceeded to apply the polyurethane ourselves using a brush.

were following the instructions on the can but after 2 coats of the polyurethane the wood still feels pretty scratchy. its the kind of scratchy where if you slid your foot over it while wearing socks, you would hear your socks getting caught as they slide along (haha thats the best way i can describe it)

the floor is "golden oak" we were told
btw this is the polyurethane were using: United Gilsonite Lab 36012 Zar Ultra Max Interior Polyurethane
http://www.amazon.com/United-Gilsonite- ... B003TXKTKG
we did 60 grit then 100 grit for all rooms

the floor seemed smooth enough, they went over the entire floor with 100 grate sandpaper
i mean, it doesnt have to look perfect, considering how poor it looked before, but i think it should at least be smooth, right?
i just want my moms floors to be perfect, she loves hardwood floor and anything i can do to get it just right ill do.

what did we do wrong/differently this time that made the floors so scratchy, and is there a way we can still recover without resanding down the living room thats already been finished?
thx guys for any help, long post i know.

summary

(tl;dr: restoring hardwood floor, an entire room done with the edger (rotating sander) at 100 grit, then strait into
'waterborne' oil polyurethane, after 2 coats, still a bit rough to the touch "scratchy". what did i do wrong and how to fix?)

i can take pictures, but like i said, it looks alright, its just the feel is off, so i dunno how helpful pictures would be.

Just buff the floor again and then coat it again. This should get rid of the roughness.
