I am about to rip out all of my old hardwood flooring in a home just [purchased. The house sat vacant for a while and the
2 1/4" oak is badly cupped in may places. I also really do not like narrow oak flooring. My rough idea on the flooring at this point is 6" heart pine that is screwed and plugged in a contrasting color. I was thinking rose wood, blood wood, walnut, ebony or something along those lines. The project will not start for another 2 months would be my guess so this is research time. My main concern is if the hardwood will be pushed out the holes from such a difference in wood density? I glued up a couple ebony plugs in a piece of pine I had laying around a few days ago. That is isnt exactly a very accurate test for a full year or temp changes and such though.

Also I have not been able to find a single photo of anything similar to what I am trying to do. If you can link me to some photos it would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks, Michael.

Your not going to get enough movement at that little dimesion of the peg to blow the peg out. If you get major movement the floor itself may cause you problems, but the pegs will still be intact.

Used to install square pegs, dont have any photos :( , they would be cool with Heart Pine.

if your current floor is badly cupped 21/4" and you plan on going back with wide pine I would be sure to check that subfloor and whats underneath it out. Something caused that floor to move, no sense in putting a new one down if there is an issue.
