Well unfortunantly this is the second time my parent's cat has decided to pee on our hardwood floors. Somehow it went unnoticed and must have layed and penetrated the floor leaving a incredibly dark stain. I don't see how this problem can be remedied other than replacing the flooring(hopefully just that section if i can sucessfully match it up well with staining). The flooring was layed in 1987. The toungue and groove board is from a local lumber company which may or may not still be in business (will have to check)....red oak i'm thinking. My dad is especially at wits end with our not so beloved 16 yr old cat. My mom or myself don't have the heart to put him asleep. I guess he has dementia and doesn't know how to use the litter box anymore. But it is very frustrating thing to deal with on a daily basis. Any comments/suggestions would greatly be appreciated.

I'm not a sand & finish guy, hopefully one will chime in. IMHO, of coarse it's repairable, but it's going to take an experienced pro to try and blend after replacement. I dont think I would expect perfection, being it's pretty tough to match ageing in color and patina of the existing floor.

The dang cat is going to die anyway...sooner or later. How many thousands of dollars worth of damage are you willing to pay for. Put it to sleep unless you have more money than brains.

Sorry to be so blunt but the truth must be told and cats do more damage than any other animal. Mostly because their urine is so strong. Try cutting into a piece of wood thats been soaked in cat urine....hurl!!!

Howard said it perfectly it can be done but it probably will not match, can get it close but very difficult to match natural aging.Your best bet is to wait until the cat is gone, no sense repairing it over and over. May need to have entire floor sanded so it will match.

I agree. Wait until the cat is gone by natural causes or putting it to sleep, then replace those boards and refinish the whole floor.

Some urine stains will sand out. Typically the very light gray stains come out but if it's dark gray or black, chances are it is there to stay. You never really know until you try sanding.

So other than removing and replacing boards, your only options are sanding and refinishing. Sanding out just the stained areas is okay but you will sand off the patina those boards have achieved. I have seen a couple of bleached floors and sometimes bleach removes the urine stain but it also drastically pulls moisture out of the boards and lightens the color.

In one instance ,a home owner had bleached multiple urine stains and while the black-ness from the urine was removed , it was replaced by very light blotches which didn't look much better. If you do bleach , you have to bleach the whole floor. I don't normally recommend it as it is extremely harsh on the wood.
