I had a Harris Tarkett engineered floating floor installed in both my living and dining rooms about 7 years ago. Since that time, two major problems have developed. First, I did not know that i needed to protect the floor in front of my sliding door...lots of sun...which has now dried and bleached that area, and second, my much loved dog decided that her 'in house bathroom' was the mantle tiles, causing considerable staining along the perimeter of the tiles and under the surround molding. My dog is not longer with us, and it really bothers me to see the damage to this one part of my floor. They no longer make this floor, though the manufacturer informed me that there is something 'close' to the color, though the installation process is abit different. I certainly don't want to replace the whole floor... 2 large rooms!... but need some kind of fix to make this look better.

A few ideas/questions..... replace the tile surround molding with something wider (6") to cover the black stains...not sure how that would look. Buy a few boxes of the new flooring...with no guarantee that it would match or blend.... As far as the dried/bleached flooring in front of my door, could that be repolyuerothaned, or screened/buffed in that one area, somewhat refinish the wood? I was told that this floor could be refinished...but again hate to do this to the whole floor... but would if that is the best solution. The floor is a long strip style floor in natural red oak.

Any ideas or help would be greatly appreciated.

Buffing and coating the bleached ares will not remove the fading. The solutiont would be to refinish the entire floor so that it will match, to blend the areas in would look like a bandaid and wont match the rest of the floor. As far as the dog stains go they may not come out depending on how long the floor was wet. On the edges if you are talking about placing a six inch cap along the edge to cover the stains in my opinion this would look like a cheap fix and would detract from the floor. I would recommend having a professional take a look at it and give you some more ideas.

I'd eiuther think about expanding and or redoing the tiles and also tile along the sliders. Or have a guy do some border work around the mantle with the new wood. Send a picture.
