I was faced recently with figuring out a secure way to toenail the last few courses of 3/4" floor. The floor is a float job, over 3/4" plywood subfloor, over concrete.
I couln't use long nails since the subfloor was floated over concrete and a vapor barrier. I couldn't find cut nails, the little 4d finish nails seemed way too small. In desparation I remembered trim screws.
So with some 1.5" trim screws and a small milwaukee angle head drill, I set to finish it off.
Very nice -- the wood needed to be pre-drilled, but the screws pull the wood over much better than just toenailing. And with luck, you can get even the second to last course screwed and then just face nail the very last strip.
Anyhow -- sometimes a newbie does something "out of the box" that works -- figured I'd mention it.
