Pecan flooring is often mixed in with hickory in UNFINISHED flooring. In fact, NOFMA groups them together as hickory/pecan. Now I think it is important to know if you are getting ALL pecan or mixed with hickory because hickory is not as clear nor as stable as all pecan. The only all pecan floor I've done was a engineered prefinished floor glued to concrete. It looked great and the customer was happy.

We had just installed, sanded and finished this true pecan gym floor just before Katrina. We tore it out after Katrina and replaced it with more pecan.
We also install it in many homes, it makes a nice floor.

From the NHLA:

"A National Hardwood Lumber Association Inspector will not make any distinction in species between Hickory and Pecan."

http://www.natlhardwood.org/pdf/Rulebook.pdf Go to page 29.

This is because you can't tell the difference between the two. Yes, I can tell the difference in the trees. Yes, I can tell the difference in the logs. No, I can't tell the difference in the lumber.

I have actually been involved in a "Yes, I can....No, you can't arguement." This was years ago. So, I named the logs correctly and then they were marked from the ends and sawn. Presented to me as lumber, mixed together. I lost the arguement.
