Ahhh, Shellac one of the best & oldest primers ever conceived. I have used it for years, the only thing I find to whine about is cleaning my tools with ammonia. At least that's cheaper than denatured alcohol, non flammable and can be dumped down the drain! I was planning on locating the joists and screwing through both the particle board and the plywood with 2" coarse thread drywall screws. If I understand correctly your recommending adhesive and fasteners for the finish flooring and the shellac primer to seal the particle board? I'll do a search on strip gluing as I don't know what that is. We are going with 2" staples for the install, I know there may not be much of the staples hitting the joists given the angle/subfloors and am hopeful that the 1/2" plywood will secure things as well as can be expected. Believe me when I say I'd remove that particle board in a New York minute but her finances are tight. It's her first home and sometimes you have to do what you can and hope for the best! Thanks for the advice, this Dad appreciates it!
