I broke off part of the tongue in my doorway shown near the knee pad. About 8 inches opf missing tongue, although the remaining end of the tongue is also cracked. The next board could be long enough to receive several inches of tongue from the other boards on each end of this damaged board. Would the tongues from the neighboring boards be enough tongue to hold the next board in place considering all the other boards that will fit to the next board will also hold it in place? Image is at: http://havenport.com/floor.JPG If so I guess I should try a single board running the length of the doorway here as it would pick up the most possible tongue, but its ends will fit under the doorway jambs.

The three nails or staples currently in this broken board still go well through it at the 45 degree angle so I think they will hold this broken board in place and prevent it from lifting.

Not sure I know how to carve out a groove in the damaged board to insert a spline if I have to do so.

Tongues break...Fasten it as usual, should secure down fine..and install a long plank up against it, locked into the planks on either side.
If it bugs you...cut out some underlayment, and squirt some glue under it. Or top nail it. Or pull it out. I would go for the first suggestion.

Are those top nails in the planks next to it?

Ok. Thanks. Will do.

Yes they are. It is about a two foot board with 3/4 lying about an inch from the hall wall. Had to top nail that 18 inches and must have lost my wits and added two where I could have stapled it through the door opening.

Since that one is only top nailed maybe I should remove that board and use my angle grinder to remove this stapled one with the broken tongue and replace both.

There ya go :) I would...something you have to live with. Pretty tough to hide top nails in a pre-finished floor, and they only look worse in time. Just kill two birds with one stone, and knock the busted tongue plank out too. Shouldn't need an angle grinder...just take a sharp chisel and pound it out of there, with the chisel at a 45 degree angle.

Ok

I think I will. Although my wife just suggested that I may accidentally create additional worse problems such as damaging the tongues on the boards next to the two I take out.

I guess that shouldn't happen if I chisel away the wood until I get near the other tongues and once there am very very careful about removing word rather than prying up the board I'm removing, thereby damaging the tongue of the boards I'm leaving.

It's a nail down installation. The t&g will slide right apart. A gluedown is another story.

You can always cut out the middle of the plank with a circular saw also, and tap the edges out toward the middle.

I don't see why yoru top nailing it at all in the first place. If a tongue splits, pull it out and replace it before going forward with the next plank.

Ok. Thanks. Will do.

I've found two boards the same length as the ones I'll remove, so should be ready to fix these errors and head into the room tomorrow.

The top nailing was for the plank to the left of the one with the broken tongue. I'd top nailed that one where it was too close to the hallway wall to use my stapler. By mistake I added two top nails beyond the wall in the doorway where I should have used my stapler.

Thanks again!
