Hi,

I'd like to install 3/4" x 2 1/4" prefinished mirage red oak flooring parallel to my floor joists in a room that is 18' x 12'. The subfloor is 3/4" plywood. Is my subfloor sufficient for parallel installation?

Thanks,
Scott

Add a layer of ½" to the existing ¾" or you'll be sorry.

If I add a 1/2" to just one room will I need some kind of ugly saddle in the doorway between the room and hallway? The hallway will be 1/2" lower since the boards will be crosswise to the joists? Is there a better way to transition between the room and hallway?

Thanks,
Scott

If you dont want the transition you can continue the ply down the hall. One alternitive if you can get to the joist is to cross block all of them.

I definitely wan't to avoid the transition but I'm also laying hardwood in another room as well as the hallway.

This room is on my second floor above my living room so it appears my contractor would have to pull up the plywood to cross-block the 18' x 12' room. Is this an expensive procedure?

Adding a 1/2" of plywood to my entire 2nd floor also sounds expensive.

Both these rooms and the hallway are on the same floor of my condo. Only this one room is parallel joist. Ideally I'd like to run my boards along the longest dimension of my room. I don't think running them along the shorter dimension so I'm crossing the joist correctly would look good. I'm concerned about resale. Would it look funky to run my other room and hallway lenghtwise and the 2nd room at a 45 degree angle?
